British Gypsum Thistle Browning Gypsum Undercoat Plaster- 25kg (pallet of 40 bags)
Thistle Browning is a gypsum undercoat plaster designed for use on moderate suction backgrounds with an adequate mechanical key. When combined with a final coat of Thistle MultiFinish, Thistle Browning provides a smooth, inert, high-quality surface for internal walls and ceilings, creating a durable base for the application of decorative finishes. This lightweight, retarded hemihydrate, pre-mixed gypsum plaster incorporates expanded perlite aggregate, requiring only the addition of clean water for preparation. Thistle Browning is one of our plaster products that is certified to BES 6001, achieving an 'Excellent' rating.
CHARACTERISTICS
Gypsum plasters offer excellent fire protection due to gypsum's unique behaviour in fire. Materials adjacent to the unexposed side will not exceed 100°C, which is below the temperature at which most materials ignite and far below the critical temperatures for structural components. Once the gypsum layer is fully calcined, the residue acts as an insulating layer while remaining intact.

- Bags should be stored dry, as water absorption shortens the setting time, causes set lumps to form in the bags, and may reduce the strength of the plasterwork.
- Skim finishing using Thistle Browning should be done on the smooth face of the board.
- Thistle plasters should be mixed by adding them to clean water in clean mixing equipment. Contamination from previous mixes adversely affects the setting time and strength. Fresh contamination has more effect than old, so equipment should be washed just after mixing rather than just before.
- Plaster should be applied with firm pressure, built out to the required thickness in two applications, and trowelled to achieve a smooth matte finish.
- Gypsum-based plasterwork must always be thoroughly dry before decorating, although a coat of permeable paint can be applied in the interim.
- Tiles up to 20kg/m² can be applied directly to Thistle Browning, except where the system includes a bonding agent.
