Ceresit Insulated Renders for UK EWI Projects
External Wall Insulation and Render Systems
If you are planning on conducting an external wall insulation project, what you will need are not only detailed instructions, but also high quality components, if you want to be pleased with the overall result. Namely, what you need to understand is that each component of the system needs to fulfil the basic requirements in regard to the air tightness of the construction, weather resistance, thermal and acoustic insulation, durability and impact resistance. Basically, if you focus only on the insulation materials you are installing and disregard the rest, you may end up with something that will not be able to follow the characteristics of the rest of the system. In order of making sure that something like this does not happen to you, Ceresit has developed insulted renders for UK EWI projects.
Before moving on some basic advantages of the mentioned render systems, you will need some basic information on external wall insulation that is on few of the basic steps that need to be followed when installing the system. What you will need for your UK EWI project is as follows:
- high quality insulation product, best some rigid insulation boards or alternatively rock wool slabs. When choosing an insulation product, you should always bear in mind that it will be covering your exterior wall, why it must be able to withstand all the temperature differences, posses a level of moisture and fire resistance and be durable and flexible enough since it has to work well with the other components of the system and should be able to follow the life span of the building, if you want a cost-effective solution;
- flexible and weather resistant adhesive which must be able to hold the insulation firmly in place without the risk of it falling off or hanging loose in the years to come, regardless of the installation method you are applying;
- a primer, if necessary;
- required fixings and other accessories including panel fixings, profiles, beads and meshes and
- a proper finish, found in high quality insulated render systems. This is where we would strongly advise you only go for proven products that have a long tradition and verified results. Ceresit products will offer you just that, since they have been present on the market for over a century, and have proven to be among preferred insulation and building products available. All the renders are made only from high quality and properly tested pigments, binders and fillers, they are biological contaminants and moisture resistant, available in over 200 standard colours which allows you to harmonize your exterior with the construction and its surrounding. We believe that it is important to end up with proper protection from climatic influences, mechanical stress, atmosphere pollutants, UV rays and weather changes, why Ceresit insulted renders are the thing you need.
Installation Procedure
Once you have gathered all the required components in accordance with the upper mentioned instructions, it is time to get to work and start the installation of your UK EWI system. The first thing you need to do is make sure that you will be adding the components onto a dry, clean and sound surface, which means that all dirt, grease or any loose render must be properly removed, if you want to achieve high level of adhesion and durability.
Once the wall surface is levelled and primed, it is time to install a base profile which should be fixed at 300mm centres. Alternatively, Insulation Shop offers high quality PVC base profiles (drip bead) which go at the DPC level and slide without fixings between the plynth and wall insulation boards, available in different widths and suitable for different render thicknesses and can be, if necessary, used in combination with a PVC single section.
Depending on the chosen insulation material, it should be installed onto the wall surface, with the adequate adhesive added to the back of the board or rock wool slab. You could either cover the entire surface of the insulation slab for better adhesion or apply the ribbon and dab method when fixing rigid insulation boards, where all the edges are covered with the adhesive and dots are added to the middle, at equal distances from one another. The boards should be installed in a brick bond pattern, firmly pressed onto the wall using a straight edge, any excessive mortar removed and gaps of more than 2mm in insulation properly sealed with parts of rock wool insulation or adequate sealant. The boards need to be reinforced with proper mechanical fixings.
Reveal beads should be installed around window and doors in order of sealing potential gaps in the insulation, and protected with wing mesh bead. Additional reinforcement is secured at the window corners with reinforcing strips added. Once the reinforcing mortar layer and fibreglass rendering mesh is added to the entire surface of the wall, and Ceresit CT 16 primer added if necessary, it is time to move on to the installing Ceresit render systems.
When choosing a render, it is good to know what you can choose from. There are different types of renders available, whereas some basic classification includes:
- mineral renders (such as Ceresit CT 137) which are applicable in both internal and external applications on different substrates such as concrete, gypsum, traditional plasters etc. which are hydrophobic and vapor permeable, making them a perfect combination with insulation boards in EWI projects;
- acrylic renders (such as Ceresit CT 60 EWI render) which are available in stone texture in more than 200 colours, conveying a densely arranged aggregate grain. They exhibit low water absorption, making it highly weather resistant, limiting the level of atmospheric deposits on the façade.
- silicone renders (such as Ceresit CT 74) are also very versatile in colour and texture, usually applied where high permeability is required, resistant to dirt thus being able to maintain the colour stability in many years to come.
- silicate renders (such as Ceresit CT 72) are applicable to both internal and external surfaces, properly protected from biological contaminants, moisture and dirt resistant, suitable for different types of substrates;
- silicone-silicate renders (such as Ceresit CT 174) combine the best of both silicone and silicate renders, demonstrating high vapour permeability, low water absorbance, UV and dirt resistance.
Once you have chose your preferable Ceresit render system, it is time to apply it onto the designated wall surface. The good thing is that all available renders are ready to use and require no additional work. The required texture can be achieved by moving the float in vertical, horizontal or circular moves. If you want to combine different colours of available insulted render systems, or you require interruptions in the work (at window lines for example), this can be achieved with nothing more than some masking tape.
