Styrozone Inverted Roof Insulation Boards Properties

Styrozone Inverted Roof Board Properties

Everything You Need to Know about Styrozone H 350 R Board

Since roofs are generally very vulnerable when it comes to effects of external factors such as extreme temperatures, rainfall, air filtration, they need special attention and protection. Flat roofs, unlike pitched roofs, also require special considerations when it comes to protection from water vapour and moisture, since the rain collecting on the roof will not fall of the roof, due to its flat surface. This is why people often choose inverted roof constructions which are consisted of a waterproofing membrane positioned under the insulation layer which is weighted down with gravel ballast or paving slabs. What happens is that the rain goes through the ballast, between the insulation when it finally reaches the waterproofing membrane and drains away. This way, the insulation boards offer protection for the membrane from some natural occurrences such as UV radiation, frost or extreme temperature fluctuations. If you believe that these roofing systems are just what you need, then Kingspan offers a solution in Styrozone roof insulation boards that are especially designed for inverted roofs and green roof systems.

How Do They Work?

We will indicate some of the Styrozone inverted roof properties and explain why they can be more than useful when it comes to protecting your roof.

Kingspan insulation boards are made from extruded polystyrene core that is enclosed with smooth skin layer on both sides. These rigid insulation boards are manufactured in accordance with the highest environmental standards, thus resulting in 0 Ozone Depletion Potential and very low Global Warming PotentialKingspan Styrozone insulation boards are available in standard dimension 1,26 x 0,6 and various thicknesses, suitable for different applications and on-site requirements. Another advantage is the fact that the boards offer great comprehensive strength (exceeding 300 kPa at 10% compression), thus able to withstand imposed roof structure loads. Their basic advantage over alternative insulation products is that they are completely water vapour and moisture resistant, and also unaffected by repeated thaw or freeze cycles, making them ideal for flat roofs and inverted roofing systems, where this feature is of extreme importance.

If installed correctly the boards can have unlimited life span, however depending on the composition and durability of the surrounding structure. Their durability is only enhanced by the fact that they are resistant to most common construction and building materials, and also vermin, fungi and rodents resistant. However, please note that some organic materials can result in loss of performance of the insulation, caused by its dissolution, shrinkage and softening. If you are planning on using Kingspan Styrozone boards in commercial sector, then you will be glad to hear that the boards are also fire resistant, with the maximal operation temperature of 75º C. Last, but not least, both insulation boards offer substantial thermal conductivity and thermal resistance value, for outstanding thermal performance of the entire structure.

Some Additional Considerations

As upper mentioned, Kingspan Styrozone insulation boards are especially designed for protected membrane roofing systems (where the waterproofing membranes is typically installed under the insulation layer, thus protected by it) and green roofs (as a popular “greener” alternative to traditional roofs).

When insulating your flat roof, please keep in mind the following requirements:

  • in order of limiting and controlling potential cold bridging, note that all components of the roofing system such as gutters or ventilation kerbs need to be properly insulated, whereas the insulation thickness should correspond to the roof insulation thickness;
  • always make sure that the entire structure will be able to withstand wind loads. This will depend on the location of the building and its size (the number of stories), whereas, for example, building with up to ten stories require at least 50mm gravel ballast layer while buildings with ten to 15 stories, the perimeter may require 50mm thick paving slabs;
  • in order of ensuring adequate drainage and prevent rainwater ponds formation, the fall of the roof should be steep enough and smooth;
  • another thing you should take into account are the rainfall factors. Make sure that the insulation thickness will be adequate to ensure the required U values of the roof structure, why it is always recommended to use non-woven polyethylene membrane over the Styrozone insulation boards that can help reduce the potential heat loss;
  • rainwater outlets need to allow the rainwater to be drained from the upper surface level and at the membrane level. This is particularly important in green roof systems, where a moisture retention layer should be considered, which could provide necessary moisture but still allow adequate rainwater drainage.

Different types of green roof

Hopefully, all the above mentioned and explained benefits and properties of Kingspan Styrozone H 350 R has got you convinced that what you will get is a proper roofing system, protected from solar radiation, condensation, mechanical damage, extreme temperatures and UV degradation.
