Recent survey shows the truth about energy efficiency literacy in UK

It has become clear by now that having all relevant information and basic knowledge on energy efficiency is the first step towards improving it. Thus, many schemes and programs, including educational ones, have been prepared and implemented over the years, all in order of educating and raising awareness of the population on important energy efficiency issues that have become a burning issue nowadays.

However, in spite of the fact that some information on some basic energy efficiency measures (especially insulation) have become publicly available, results of the recent survey conducted by the ComRes on behalf of the National Energy Foundation are somewhat troubling. The survey addressed many different topics and, among others, included questions on energy efficiency basics, as it was commissioned as background to the launch of the National Energy Foundation’s “Working together towards an energy-literate UK” program.

The survey included 2,058 British adults and gave some interesting results. For example, almost 80% of the public believes that the right way towards energy efficiency lays in proper education on energy efficient measures conducted by the government or private employers, while almost 60% believes that the best way to solve present energy problems is through innovative technology solutions. The results were also somewhat contradictive, since although almost 58% think that they posses enough energy efficiency information, almost 60% did not know that most of the energy in the UK derives from fossil fuels. The problem goes further on as only 50% of the public actually knows which type of light bulbs are most energy efficient. Finally, only 23% of surveyed adults could identify energy efficiency and more rational use of energy as ways of reducing energy use in the UK.

As Kerry Mashford, Chief Executive of the National Energy Foundation, stated: “These survey results confirm that action needs to be taken to inform and empower individuals and organizations...”, it is very important to get to know some basic information on best and most effective energy efficiency measures that could not only result in reduced fuel consumption and lower carbon footprint, but also benefit your budget, since these can lead to considerable money savings on the long run. This especially goes for insulation, which is among the most useful energy efficiency measures that does not need to be too expensive, but can go a long way!
